Philip Joel Mahn, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Gilbert, Arizona, on April 29, 2026. Known affectionately since childhood as “Buz,” Phil was a man of service, adventure, and deep devotion to his family. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 55 years, Linda L. Mahn.

Phil’s story began in Muskegon, Michigan, where he was born to Philip Joel Sr. and Cynthia Mahn on December 18, 1945. It was in Muskegon where he met the love of his life, Linda. Their meeting 55 years ago set the stage for a lifetime of partnership and a shared journey of travel and adventure. Shortly after they wed, Phil embarked on a distinguished 22-year career in the United States Air Force, taking the couple on a journey across countless states and countries.

Throughout his decades of service, Phil was highly decorated for his dedication and leadership. His commendations included the Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 OLCs), the Air Force Commendation Medal (with 2 OLCs), and the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon (with 4 OLCs), among many others. He concluded his military career in the winter of 1988 with the US Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. Transitioning to civilian life, Phil spent another 20 successful years in the aerospace industry.

Upon his final retirement, Phil and Linda settled in Gilbert, Arizona. There, they spent their golden years golfing, traveling, and cherishing the company of their many friends. Above all else, Phil was immensely proud of his family.

He is survived by his two daughters, Michelle A. Arnett (Scott) of Yorkville, Illinois, and Kimberly I. Check (Douglas) of Gilbert, Arizona. He also leaves behind six grandchildren who rightfully outranked him in his heart: Brandon and Riley Arnett; and Brody, Charlie, Duke, and Kane Check. Phil was preceded in death by his wife, Linda, and his siblings, Thomas and Edward Mahn.

His daughters are extremely grateful for the love and support shown to Phil during his final days; your kindness provided great comfort to the family. In honor of Phil’s life, charitable donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
