Praise the Lord! Praise God in His Sanctuary;…Praise Him with tambourine and dance; praise Him with strings and pipe! Psalm 150: 1a, 4 (NRSV)

Pastor Charles H. Tinsley, Jr, entered fully into the presence of the Lord on May 3, 2023. He was 76 years old. While his family is deeply saddened by his passing, we know Philippians 1:21 to be true: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” and “…absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). His faith has come to fruition, and he will live with his Savior, Jesus Christ, forever.

Pastor Charles, affectionately called “Sandy” by his family, was born on December 14, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana to his mother, Alice Tinsley, and his father, Charles H. Tinsley Sr. Pastor Charles excelled at everything he did. He did exceptionally well in school then went on to university and made his family proud when he received both Bachelor and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he married the love of his life, Barbara J. Miles, and they spent 55 years happily married and had a beautiful life together.

Pastor Charles spent over thirty years working at companies such as Exxon, Motorola and General Dynamics and was respected by all his colleagues and friends. He also shared his knowledge in Mechanical Engineering by teaching at Southern University where he was loved and respected by all his students and fellow professors.

While Pastor Charles was a decorated engineer, he found his true purpose in serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Over the years, he stewarded people of all ages in various ministries; He served as the Chair of the Trustee Board, the Ambassador for Promise Keepers, and established a Promise Keeper group at the First Institutional Baptist Church (FBIC) in Phoenix, Arizona; Also, at FBIC he served as Seniors Sunday School Teacher and was a leader in the Men’s Ministry.  He also served as Deacon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Pastor Charles and wife Barbara are the founders, owners, and administrators of the New Destiny Leadership Charter School; and Senior Pastors of the Beth El International Outreach Ministries both based in Chandler, Arizona. Charles served as Prayer Coordinator for the Promise Keepers Conference in Arizona; Continuing to live his purpose of building disciples for the Kingdom, Charles received his Doctorate of Practical Ministry – Leadership Specialization in Men’s Ministry from Beth El International Bible College in 2019.

Pastor Charles is survived and missed by his loving wife Barbara; forever cherished and remembered by his two brothers, Donald Tinsley Sr. and Tyrone (Selina) Tinsley; their godchildren Donald Tinsley, Jr., Justina Wells, Stephon Wells, Detra Harper, Jabree Richardson and Jabreea Richardson; brothers-in-law, Robert Beasley and Carl (Kim) Beasley; sisters-in-law, Dr. Sharon Beasley-Teague, Dr. Beverly (Bruce) Rollins, and Roberta Beasley; nephews Charles Hilliard, Donald Tinsley Jr. (Shawnte); nieces Alice Hilliard and Rebecca Tinsley; a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He preceded in death by his parents Charles H. and Alice Tinsley, siblings Eula Hilliard and Alan Tinsley.

Pastor Charles’s legacy will carry on forever reminding us that the most important things in life are Jesus, our faith and family – family that we are born with and family we gain throughout our lives.  Just like Pastor Charles, we as Christians choose to continue living a life of meaningful acts of love and service, like Christ modeled for us.
