Walter Vincent “Vinnie” Hayes Jr, 78 of Gilbert, AZ, formerly of Weston, CT passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025. Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Walter V Hayes and Aline Hayes.
Walt graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI. After graduating from Rogers High, he moved to Boston to pursue an education in mechanics where he met his wife and best friend Mary Ellen.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force and became a helicopter mechanic. He was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force base, home of the 341st Missile Wing, Great Falls Montana. As a helicopter mechanic, he maintained the Bell UH-1 Huey Helicopter.
After leaving the Air Force he began his career working for Bigelow Tea Company in Fairfield, CT where he spent over 20 years working as a mechanic. During these years he lived in Weston, CT where he built a home for his wife and son.
He became a Member of the Weston Volunteer Fire Department and spent his spare time cutting down trees, gardening, and working with his beloved father-in-law Michael Esposito.
Walt and Mary Ellen later moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he became certified nurse’s aide at the Life Care Center of Scottsdale.
Walter is survived by his devoted wife, care giver, and best friend of 55 years, Mary Ellen; his son Michael and his wife Barbara of Weston, CT, his two beloved granddaughters Madison and Gabrielle and several nieces and nephews.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents and sister Connie Spinney of Newport, RI.
A private ceremony will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, located in Phoenix.
