David W Scott was born February 8, 1938, and passed from this life, surrounded by his family, at the age of 87 on July 18, 2025.
He was born in Thomas, Idaho to Durwerd and Verna Scott, and worked hard on the family farm. He attended Snake River High School, and after graduation, chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve in the New England Mission.
He went on to college at San Jose State University in California and studied metallurgy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. It was while he was at SJSU that he met his wife, Katheryn Kay Mowrey. They were married in the Oakland Temple on December 21, 1964. And together they were blessed with 5 children.
David had a long career in engineering at IBM in San Jose. And enjoyed church service, serving in many different callings throughout his life. After retirement and moving to Gilbert, AZ, David served alongside his wife as a temple worker in both the Mesa and Gilbert temples. When he wasn’t busy with work or service, he could often be found working on a car or tinkering with something else that needed repair.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Durwerd and Verna Scott. He is survived by his wife, Kay Scott; his children, James and Akemi Scott, Beth Scott, Rebecca and Greg Parrott, Margaret and Al Welle, and Sarah and Bryan Hunt; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Allen Scott, Ilene Scott, Stephen and Esther Scott, Sherrel and Jay Ellis, Miriam and Eric Ericson, Myron Scott, and Michael and Shirley Scott.
So thankful to have had such a wonderful man for my brother and friend. David you are so dearly loved, and thought of. Will miss you!
I have been a frequent visitor at Sunday dinner in the Scott home. I loved Dave’s family prayers, deliberately and reverently spoken, as the audible side of a conversation with the Lord.
As a younger cousin of Kay, I was excited about their marriage in the then brand-new Oakland CA temple. Our families, through the twin bond of her mother and my father, lived in Santa Cruz CA, together with each other but far away from our extended family in Utah. Kay was the spiritual leader in the Mowrey family, and a mentor to us younger kids. I love Dave and Kay, and I’m sorry for your temporary separation.
It has been a long time since we have seen you and the family. We remember the visits we had in San Jose. Dave was a fine man and you had a wonderful family. May the Lord comfort you at this difficult time.
David is a very special man, and brother, even in his younger years he stood out quietly but firmly. He was always calm and collected, he was always beyond his years. He always treated me with love and respect, even when I didn’t deserve it. I learned a lot about the good things in life from David, he was a wonderful example to us all. He always thought of others even when it was difficult. The miles between us limited our time together, but he has shone us the path to follow to obtain true happiness. We will miss him, and look forward to being with him again. We love you Dave, and thank you for the special brother, and the example you set as one of our Heavenly Father’s choice sons.
