Submit a PhotoSarah Jane Goering, 87 years young, passed away peacefully with her kids by her side, on Aug 27, 2021 in Phoenix, AZ. Sarah was born to Howard and Delores Butler in Avon, Illinois on April 1, 1934 where she was the second oldest of 9 children.
Sarah married the love of her life Richard (Dick) on September 21, 1957 and were so lucky to have celebrated almost 51 years together. Sarah leaves behind her beloved daughter Diane (Jon) of Gilbert, AZ, and son Keith of Yorkville, IL, three grandsons, Dylan, Josh, and Liam, three sisters, Clara McKeehan (Mac), Linda Verebelyi (Zoli), Marie Schuster (Mark), and 3 brothers, John Butler (Sharon), Vince Butler (Nita), Lawrence Butler (Elvira) and her loyal dog Koko. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband Dick, her parents Howard and Delores, and her sisters Patty Rathke and Diane Butler.
Sarah attended Avon High School and went on to graduate from Illinois State University in 1956 with a Bachelor’s in Education. While at Illinois State she was a member of the famous Gamma Phi Circus performing on the trapeze. She worked as a speech teacher until meeting Dick Goering, and then decided to stay at home to raise Diane and Keith.
Sarah lived a long happy, fulfilled life and will be remembered for so many things. Playing and teaching bridge to anyone who wanted to play the game she loved, her huge heart, her loud laugh, her passions for reading and horses, her outspokenness, her love of garage sales, her interest in Indian and Southwestern Culture, her love of country singer Chris LeDoux, and her never ending love and support for her family and friends. Sarah was a true fighter and she never gave up on anything or anyone. She touched so many lives and will be truly missed by all!
There will be a Celebration of Life held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 from 11am-12pm at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Robertson Chapel, 100 W. 86th St. Indianapolis, IN 46260 with lunch being served immediately after.
