About Ruby Elaine Standifird

Ruby Elaine Mitchell Standifird, 83, of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Ruby was known for her devotion to the Savior, and for her unconditional love for her family.

Ruby was born July 21, 1942 in Aberdeen, Idaho to parents Nelson Mitchell and Mildred Leyshon Mitchell. She was the second child of 4 children. She is survived by her two sisters Shirleen and Lenore, her two sons Barry (Lori) of Payson, AZ, and Chad of Mesa, AZ, and her 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in her death by her parents Nelson and Mildred, her brother Blaine (Shirley), and her beloved daughter Shanna, whom she missed so dearly throughout the 15 years they were apart. She attended school in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen High School.

It was in Aberdeen where Ruby met Robert Standifird, and the two were married on May 23, 1961. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Mesa, Arizona where they welcomed their three children; Barry, Chad, and Shanna. Although their marriage later ended, Ruby remained stalwart in creating a home centered on strong values and spiritual conviction.

While raising her family, Ruby completed nursing school, became a registered nurse, and devoted her career to caring for others, including serving as a school nurse. She had a passion for learning, and later went on to earn a second degree in education. She found a love in working with children, and spent years working as a school teacher at Julia Randall Elementary and Payson Elementary school. Whether caring for patients, teaching students, or supporting family and friends, Ruby's life was marked by service and love.

She was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and developed a lifelong faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. She served in many callings and capacities within the church, including as Young Women's president. She served a mission as a senior missionary, in the temple and working in family history.

Ruby was known for her spirited personality and her ability to bring instant joy to those around her. Her friends and family are so eternally grateful for the influence she had on their lives, and for the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
