Regina G. Nocella Cancro, a woman of fierce independence and a spirit all her own, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, in Gilbert, Arizona, at the age of 91. Born on May 17, 1933, in the Bronx, New York, Regina lived a life brimming with determination and individuality, leaving a lasting impression on those who crossed her path.

Regina spent most of her years in Mineola, New York, where she built a beautiful life alongside her beloved husband, Edward Cancro. Together, they shared 33 years of marriage filled with love and mutual support. Edward was her anchor and her greatest love, and even after his passing, she carried his memory in her soul, an enduring light that guided her always.

Regina is survived by her children: Madalyn and her husband William, Deborah and her husband William, Barbara and her husband Walter, and Edward and his wife Robin. Her grandchildren—Rebecca, William and his wife Emily, Dominic and his wife Alison, and Samantha and her husband John—held a special place in her thoughts, as did her three great-grandchildren, Maria, Emilia, and Dominick. Regina spoke of them often, her voice lighting up with pride and hope—especially for the arrival of another great-granddaughter due in July. She never missed a birthday or anniversary call, her voice a steady presence across the miles, a testament to her quiet dedication to those she held dear.

Regina’s brilliance as a mechanical engineer was undeniable. As the first woman in her department at Grumman, where she worked for over two decades, she shattered expectations with her intellect and grit. Her pioneering spirit was a source of pride, a legacy of courage for those who came after her.

Regina’s world was one of keepsakes and stories. She was a collector at heart, surrounding herself with treasures from stamps to countless mementos, each piece a part of the life she built. In her quieter moments, she found joy in knitting, reading, and in her love for elephants—a passion that brought her delight through figurines, artwork, or tales of their gentle strength.

Above all, Regina’s life was defined by her unwavering devotion to her Roman Catholic faith. As a proud member of the Franciscan Order, she lived her beliefs with a deep and abiding commitment, turning to her Bible and prayer book each day not just for solace, but as a guiding light that shaped her every step. Her faith was her rock, a source of strength and meaning that carried her through triumphs and trials alike, and she cherished the rituals and community that bound her to her spiritual home.

Regina lived life boldly, unapologetically herself—independent, complex, and unforgettable. Her sharp mind and quiet resolve left a mark on those who knew her, and though she was a keeper of secrets and stories, her heart held a depth that resonated. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Gilbert Memorial Park Cemetery & Funeral Home, located at 2100 E Queen Creek Road, Gilbert, AZ 85297.

A Funeral Mass to be held on Tuesday, April 29th at 10:30am at Corpus Christi Church located at 155 Garfield Avenue, Mineola, NY 11501 with reception to follow.

Many fond memories of our childhood growing up with the Cancro family. Lori and I, although very young, enjoyed watching my dad and Eddie play softball for the fire department. We are praying for your family. I am sure that my mom and sister greeted each of your parents in Heaven. God bless.
