A Life Remembered
Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Patricia L Glenn share the news of her untimely passing at home in Gilbert, AZ on Thursday, February 9, 2023. She was born December 25, 1948, in Fremont MI to Leopold & Myrna (Branch) Roeske, with the family later relocating to Largo FL.
Her life was largely driven by her love of music, art, language, cuisine, and teaching. Following graduation from Largo High School, Pat enrolled at Presbyterian College (Eckerd University) where she met her first husband. They moved to Atlanta where she briefly sang in a country-folk bar, worked as a bilingual receptionist at the Canadian consulate, and completed her B.A. at Georgia State. She subsequently completed her M.A in Comparative Literature with additional work towards a PhD at Emory University. While at Emory she developed a reputation for her intuitive understanding of modern art and wrote her thesis on the abstract expressionist Arshile Gorky.
She would go on to live a number of years in Germany and France where she taught German to US soldiers stationed overseas and continued raising a family. In 1983, the family returned to Franklin, TN. A trained vocalist and avid lover of choral music, Patricia sang in multiple church choirs concurrently. She became an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, directed the children’s choir, and served on multiple church committees. In her free time could be found deeply engrossed in projects that included gardening, sewing, knitting, renovating the family’s antebellum farmhouse, reading, or exploring exotic new recipes. On more than one occasion, her homemade ice cream racked up multiple awards at the annual church picnic.
Professionally, she taught French at Battleground Academy as well as French, German, and Art History at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. She eventually left the classroom to begin a lengthy career as an elite Educational Consultant for Holt, Rinehart & Winston/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a job that allowed her to crisscross the country providing teacher training for foreign languages, language arts, and social studies.
Upon retirement in 2011, Pat once again had the opportunity to pursue her creative side. She not only began to explore new recipes in the kitchen but also rediscovered her passion for the fiber arts. She became a proud and enthusiastic member of Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild and shared her loved of the craft by conducting many classes for local East Valley fabric stores. When not teaching classes, she would spend hours in her home workshop intently studying and practicing aspects of quilting, knitting, crocheting, embroidery and spinning yarn. Her creations will provide an enduring legacy for her family and friends. Retirement provided additional time for leisure travel to Europe, Hawaii, New York, Washington, DC, and Mexico, as well as to pursue her golf interest with her husband and a close group of local friends.
She is survived by her loving husband, Richard (Rick) Glenn; sons, Hamilton Paine (Julie Schofield) of Washington DC, Patrick Paine (Miriam Kelly) of Brooklyn NY, Jacob Paine of Nashville TN; stepdaughters, Jenny Real (Tracy Real) of Prescott Valley AZ, Megan Glenn of Brooklyn NY; grandchild, Paxton Paine (Hamilton Paine & Julie Schofield); and step-grandchildren, Caeley Jones, Chloe Jones, Jared Jones (Tracy & Jenny Real); sister, Pam Chapin of Largo FL, nephew, Adam Chapin of Largo FL, and namesake, Aunt Patricia Schebor of Chandler AZ.
