Interment: National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona

Leonard (Lenny) David Singer, 81, of Chandler, Arizona, died on November 1st, 2024.  He was born to Theodore and Jeanette Singer in Brooklyn, New York on August 16th, 1943.

Lenny served in the Army in Fort Hood, TX from 1963-65 before returning to New York to work at the New York Times, then owned and drove an NYC yellow taxicab.  Later, Lenny became a letter carrier at post office Branch 36 in Manhattan where he was elected shop steward.  In that role, he advocated for the rights of postal workers until 1997, when he moved from Long Island to Arizona with his family.  Lenny resumed his role in the transportation industry by driving for ExecuCar and Uber.  While behind the wheel, he always enjoyed hearing about his passengers’ lives and sharing stories.  Lenny often joked that he had a story for every question a passenger asked him.

Every day, Lenny lived with a grateful heart and brought a wonderful sense of humor and kindness to the world.  He had a love of baseball, beginning with a passion for the Brooklyn Dodgers and his favorite player, Duke Snider.  When his sons were young, he attended every baseball game they ever played, coached their teams, and started a lifelong father son fantasy baseball tradition for himself and both of his boys.  Lenny also enjoyed walking, listening to Elvis and Dean Martin, watching sports and wagering on Triple Crown races with his brother.

Lenny treasured his family and their wellbeing more than anything.  He had an unbreakable bond with his father and brother, having suffered the loss of his mom when he was only eleven.   Lenny met his wife, Janet, in the fall of 1973 and they married less than a year later.  He had a special connection with his daughter, shown by their habit of speaking multiple times a day.  And when Lenny drove for Uber, he made his own hours and truly got to enjoy the role of Grandpa.  He loved watching his grandsons play sports and perform piano recitals and was especially eager when asked to pick them up from school.  For Lenny, family love was in the details.

Lenny is survived by his wife, Janet, of 50 years, his three children, Adam (Jordana Shenkman), Jaclyn (Jeff) Alvarado, Scott Singer, two grandsons, Sawyer and Jaxson, and his brother Steve.

A private ceremony will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on Friday, January 3rd. A Celebration of Life is planned at Native Grill & Wings, 2110 S Gilbert Rd, Chandler, AZ on Saturday, January 4 from 11:30am to 3:30pm.  Friends and family are invited to attend.
