Jerry Hand, a devoted husband, loving family man, and faithful follower of Jesus, passed away peacefully on May 9th at the age of 78. His life was led by deep faith, quiet strength, and an unwavering love for his family and country.
Jerry’s relationship with Jesus was the cornerstone of his life. One of his favorite scriptures, known to many who loved him, was John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This verse was not just a quote for Jerry, but a truth he lived by—and a message he shared through his actions, his kindness, and his grace.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1965, aboard the USS Sutherland, sacrificing and serving with courage and honor. A gifted athlete, Jerry also had an competitive career playing minor league baseball for the Milwaukee Braves, a time in his life that reflected his drive, talent, and love for the game. He spoke often of the friendships made and the lessons learned on the field.
Born on October 5, 1946, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, Jerry graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1963 before beginning his service in the Navy. After his time in the military and baseball, Jerry enjoyed attending the University of Washington, a place that held many fond memories. Later in life, he would return to the campus with his daughters, sharing its beauty and significance with them as they grew up turning it into a cherished family tradition.
He later went on to work for Boeing, where he dedicated over 30 years of his life before retiring in 2012. After retirement, Jerry and Karen moved to Arizona to enjoy the sunshine and be closer to family.
Jerry shared 35 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Karen Hand. Together, they built a life rich in love, laughter, and faith. Their bond was a testament to devotion and friendship, and Jerry often said his greatest joy came from the family they created together.
He was a proud father and stepfather to Stephanie (Kelly), Nicole (Larry), Jackie (Chris), July (Bill), Jeri Beth (Brad), Brent (Laura), and Heidi (John), and a loving brother to Sandra and half-brother to Wayne. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Nadine and Thearl.
Jerry was also a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Nicole, Stephanie, Emma, Cal, Cash, Ashley, Augie, April, Marc, July, Adyson, Zachariah, Jacob, and Makayla; and a great-grandfather to 10 great-grandchildren: Kaylana, Leaundra, Larry, Kaden, Jacob, Ruger, Riley, Alaina, Jenson, and Charlotte—each of whom brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
Jerry was a man of many interests. He loved spending time outdoors, whether golfing, fishing, gardening, or exploring nature. He found peace in the stillness of creation and joy in the laughter of his grandchildren. He also had a passion for music, playing guitar, and challenging anyone to a good game of chess. He volunteered regularly at his church, where his faith continued to shine through his acts of service and love for others.
Jerry’s legacy is one of strength, humility, kindness, and faith. He leaves behind a family who will carry his love and lessons in their hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jerry’s memory to support Parkinson’s disease research and awareness (Parkinson’s Foundation) or the Disabled American Veterans.
Jerry Hand was one of the finest people I had the privilege of knowing. He was always fun to be around and we ( my late husband Ron and I) went on many vacays with Jerry and Karen and had great times together.
