Obituary

Our beloved father Evert Captain, age 87 passed away peacefully in Mesa, AZ on July 13, 2024. He was surrounded by his children, grand and great grandchildren, listening to some of his favorite oldies music.

He was born in Bogor, Indonesia on July 21, 1936, to parents Ferdinand and Dortina Johanna Jonathans Captain. He is survived by his children, Amy, Stephen, Janette, Mark, 11 Grandchildren and 10 Great grandchildren.

At age 11 and sometime in 1947 during the Indonesian war of independence, Evert fled Jakarta to The Netherlands with his mother Oma Dora, siblings Boy, De, Arie and Ben. His brother Pieter stayed to continue fighting against the rebellion. The journey took over 20 days on the ship “Asturias” traveling to Colombo, through the Suez Canal on to a French port until arriving in Amsterdam.

His childhood in The Hague on Werkhoven Straat was filled with many fond memories of family gatherings which always seemed to include Indonesian rice table style food cooked by Oma Dora.

He enjoyed watching sports, playing tennis, singing Karaoke, playing ukulele as a teen in a band, listening to Chuck Berry music, dancing and winning first place in a jitterbug dance competition with Yvonne Dijk, wife and mother of his 4 children.

In 1962 and wanting to live the American Dream, Evert made the journey (under the Pastore Walter act) with his wife Yvonne and daughter Amy.

Being the first to move to the United States and becoming a U.S. citizen, he sponsored his brothers Piet and Ben where he could once again be a family. Evert resided in Orange County for 37 yrs. and retired as a precision welder until moving to Mesa, AZ in 1999.

The funeral will be held at Gilbert Memorial Park 2100 E. Queen Creek Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85297 on July 21, 2024, at 9:00 am.

Amy, Steph, Mark and Jan – so very sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you and your families. Om Evert is a legend. Such good times my mom shared with him and Yvonne when Amy and Steph were little. She had an amazing experience being with them for almost a year in America as an older Dutch teen. Many stories of mischievous behavior and sounds like he was the catalyst much of the time. The memorial was beautiful, so very sweet to see the grandchildren so full of love and gratitude for him. You are a blessed bunch and so are we here in the Northeast and my sis Jen in Cali … we probably would not be in America if it wasn’t for Om Evert ! Thinking of you all, love Monique

My deepest sympathy to his kids and other family. I remember that oom Evert and his brother oom Ben came to Holland to visit their mam. They stayed a few days with us and I am happy I could treat them real Indonesian food. We enjoyed also a Dutch comedian in a theater in Amsterdam, named Andre van Duin. Boy .. they laughed so loud .their stomach would burst! Rest in peace

I remember oom Evert as a nice person. When he was on vacation in Holland with his brother oom Ben they stayed with us. I am glad I was able to treat them on real Indonesian food. He loved that. We once went to the theater in Amsterdam to visit the show from a Dutch comedian: Andre van Duin….. boy he laughed so hard… his stomach would burst…haha. Rest in peace oom Evert. I only met Evert on fb last year. He was my Dad’s 2nd cousin. I was able to share a photo of his Mum and my Oma. I think he and I would have got along really well because I love karaoke and playing tennis too. RIP Evert.

We share our sympathies with Amy, Stephen, Janette, Mark and their children and grandchildren in remembering Oom Evert. He was truly one of a kind and made an instant and lasting impression. He was an accomplished tennis player as a young man, which gave way to playing card games and talking about family as he grew older. He filled our card games with many stories about how he and my father, his cousin Boudewijn, use to tear up Den Hague. Oom Evert was always very welcoming, positive, and looking toward the future.
