Edward “Ed” Ivan Amaya Ph.D., J.D. was born in Rahway, New Jersey on March 11th, 1969, to Judith Amaya and Vitelio Amaya.
Ed was a loving husband and father of five boys. He was the most intelligent, hard-working, funny, kind-hearted person who loved his boys dearly. Ed was an accomplished patent attorney, and received his B.S. in Biology from Rutgers University, his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Temple University School of Medicine, and his J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law.
Ed was a big sports fan and loved to watch Inter Miami CF and cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Mets. He also loved to watch the Big Bang Theory, listen to the Grateful Dead, The Smiths, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, hike and stargaze in the great Arizona outdoors, and play with his dogs Benny and Rosie. Ed was a great neighbor with many friends in the neighborhood.
Ed unexpectedly passed on September 15th, 2024, at the age of 55, in Gilbert, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Anne, his mother, Judith, his five sons Alexander (24), Ethan (22), Aiden (20), Evan (20), and Elias (16), and Alexander’s wife, Alexia. Ed immensely loved and cared for his family, and he will be missed dearly.

Dear Anne, I am so sorry to hear this. I will never forget our times together back in 2012 and the love and compassion you had as a beautiful, caregiving wife and dedicated mother. May God hold you tenderly in His hands and bring you peace during this time.
We are deeply saddened to hear about Ed’s passing. He was a remarkable person—intelligent and so very caring. His love for you all and his joy in life’s simple pleasures are to be cherished. Out thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. May Ed’s memory bring you comfort, and may his kindness and strength live on through you and your boys who are world-changers. What an amazing legacy he has left behind!
I am very sorry to hear about Ed’s passing. I had the honor of working with Ed when he first joined Gore. He was an amazing person and a wonderful co-worker. I was in awe of his life story and how smart he was. He was clearly also a devoted family man. My condolences to Anne and the boys.
I was shocked and saddened to hear about Ed’s passing at such a young age. I was fortunate to have worked in the same lab as Ed at Temple University in Philadelphia. He was a great friend and co-worker all those years ago. My sincerest condolences go out to Anne and his children.
I’m still in disbelief reading this. Ed was such an accomplished man , great husband, father , and great next door neighbor! I enjoyed our conversations, like minded politics, and football banter. A wonderful person in all aspects gone too soon . Cindy and I wish we were still next door together with you Anne especially during this time. Much love to you and all your boys during this time!
