Dewitt Lew “D.L.” Hart, age 94, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, in Gilbert, Arizona. Born on June 22, 1930, in Iola, Kansas, D.L. lived a long and vibrant life marked by adventure, hospitality, and deep devotion to his family.
D.L. proudly served his country in the United States Army before graduating from the University of Denver with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, and embarking on a successful career in hotel and restaurant operations. His work over the years included: Harts Lunch in Iola, KS, the Williard Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Shirley-Savoy Hotel in Denver, CO, Sky Chefs airline catering, the Harmony Guest Ranch in Estes Park, CO, a corporate career with Brock Hotel Corporation, followed by some consulting work, and lastly a founding principal of Wheel Specialists, Inc. in Tempe, AZ.
Known for his wisdom and storytelling, D.L. had a natural gift for making people feel welcome—whether they were guests at one of his hotels or visitors in his own home. He was a man who embraced life fully. A passionate fan of the Denver Broncos, D.L. rarely missed a game and cheered with unwavering loyalty. He found joy in traveling across the country in his beloved Winnebago motorhome, often accompanied by family or one of the many pets he cherished over the years. He was an avid golfer, played tennis in his younger years, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing – all pastimes that reflected his love of the outdoors. Cooking was another of his great pleasures; he delighted in preparing delicious meals that brought people together around the table.
Family was at the heart of everything D.L. did. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Heather Mosbaugh and her husband Michael; his son Chris Hart and wife Christine; granddaughters Jenna Hyland and husband Ian, Michaela Bell and husband Brantley—with great-grandson Brady and great-granddaughter Blake—Claire Hart, and Makenzie Bustos and husband Christian, who are expecting a child soon. He also leaves behind numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces who were touched by his kindness and generosity. Natalie Hart-Flood, and Kimberly Hart-Grove were especially close to his heart.
D.L. was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Shirley Moses Hart; his parents David Hart and Ruth Murphey Hart; and his sister Marilyn Hart (Khan). The bond he shared with Shirley was enduring, and their love will be honored together during their joint interment.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 9:30AM to 12:30PM at Gilbert Memorial Park, located at 2100 E. Queen Creek Road in Gilbert, Arizona (85297). We will gather to celebrate the life of D.L. Hart with an interment ceremony for both D.L. and Shirley to follow. A reception will be held afterward to continue sharing memories and honoring their legacy.
May the memory of Dewitt Lew “D.L.” Hart bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well-lived—full of love, laughter, stories told around campfires or kitchen tables, and journeys taken both near and far.
