David Ray Tavares

Dave was born on November 16, 1973 in Miami, Arizona, to Patricia Rocha and William Tavares. He spent his youth in Miami, where he was known for his adventurous spirit and love of sports. He wrestled, proudly wore #56 on the football field, and was an accomplished drummer. Even then, his infectious personality and sense of humor drew people to him.

After graduating from Miami High School in 1991, Dave answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served from 1992 to 1996 in Twentynine Palms, California. During his military service, he was deployed during the Somalian Crisis and completed a tour in Japan. His time in the Marines instilled in him the values of honor, courage, and commitment that would continue to define the rest of his life.

In 1998, Dave returned home to Globe, Arizona, where he worked as a diesel mechanic at Detroit Diesel. Soon after, he stepped into his true calling in the fire service when he joined the Globe Fire Department. He later became a member of the Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department, where he built an honorable career spanning more than two decades. He proudly served his community, earning promotions to Engineer and later Captain, before retiring in 2023. Throughout his career, he held the title of Ladder Captain, Hazmat Captain, and a Recruit Training Officer at the Mesa Regional Training Academy. He was also a proud member of the Honor Guard. Dave held himself to the highest professional standards and consistently exceeded them through his leadership, dedication, and commitment to serving others. Being a firefighter was more than a profession to Dave—it was a brotherhood that enriched his life, and he was deeply proud of the work he did and the lifelong friendships he made along the way.

Outside of work, Dave embraced life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed a lifestyle grounded in health and fitness. He loved good music—especially reggae and his favorite band, 311. He enjoyed fishing, mountain biking, motocross, and spending time outdoors. One of his greatest passions was riding dirt bikes with his son, creating memories that both of them would treasure forever. In recent years, he and his wife, Karisa, found joy traveling together, exploring national parks and taking in the beauty of God’s creation.

If you knew Dave, you knew what it meant to laugh. He was charismatic, effortlessly charming, a jokester, and a prankster who never missed an opportunity to make people smile. His quick wit, playful spirit, and unforgettable sense of humor brought joy to countless lives. Behind every joke was a man with an incredibly kind heart. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need and never hesitated to be there for family, friends, or even a stranger.

Above every title he ever held—Marine, firefighter, captain, Husband—Dave was most proud to be a father and a Grampie. He shared an exceptionally close bond with his two children, Junior and Jenika. Their relationship was one built on unconditional love, friendship, laughter, and unwavering support. It was a rare gift that all three shared, and one they cherished deeply.

Dave was also the proud grandfather of Ryleigh, Khloe, Oliver, Luke, Daniella, and Damien Jr. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Whether it was a game, recital, birthday, or any special moment, Grampie was there. He loved each of them beyond measure, and they adored him just as much. To them, he wasn’t just a grandfather—he was the very best Grampie in the world.

In 2022, Dave was met with the unfortunate diagnosis of stage-4 lung cancer. He faced his diagnosis with incredible courage, determination, and grace. True to the man he had always been, he met every challenge head-on and fought with unwavering strength throughout his journey. Despite the obstacles he faced, he never allowed cancer to define him. He continued to live with purpose, love deeply, laugh often, and bring joy to everyone around him. His courage and strength throughout his illness was extraordinary.

Throughout his journey, Dave's faith became an unshakable source of strength and peace. He leaned deeply on God and found comfort in His Word, trusting in God's plan even through life's greatest challenges. His faith gave him hope, courage, and a peace that inspired everyone who walked beside him.

Dave’s legacy is one of service, loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. He leaves behind a family who adored him, countless friends who became family, and brothers and sisters in the fire service who were honored to stand beside him. Dave will be forever loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.

Dave was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ryleigh Ray; his brother, Anthony Verdugo; His grandparents, Consuelo and Art Rocha(maternal), and Juan and Santos Tavares(paternal).

He is survived by his devoted wife, Karisa Tavares; his children, Junior (Makayla) Tavares and Jenika (Damien) Tavares; his parents, Patricia and John Spencer and William and Mona Tavares; his siblings, Bill (Carrie) Tavares, Raelene (Jeremy) Zaragoza, Freddie (Rachel) Tavares, Steven (Wendy) Tavares , and Jonathan (Brittany) Tavares; along with his grandchildren, Khloe, Oliver, Luke, Daniella, and Damien Jr., as well as many beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, fellow Marines, and his brothers and sisters in the fire service, all of whom will miss him deeply.
