It is with great sadness that the family of Alice announce her passing after a long struggle with dementia at the age of 91.
Alice was born to Anna and John Roles in Towner, North Dakota, and had 9 siblings. Her only surviving sibling is Teresa (Roles) Holloway. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George, Edward, Lou, Edgar, James, and Anthony Roles, and her sisters, Mary (Roles) Baldridge, and Agnes (Roles) McMaster. She graduated from Towner High School where she was very active in the band, glee club, the pep club, and was a cheerleader. While in high school she worked after school at a local diner. She met her future husband Clifford Hiar when he was walking down the street one day and saw her sitting on the curb talking to friends. They were married in their hometown of Towner, ND in 1951.
Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where their first daughter Pamela was born. They then moved to Crystal, Minnesota where Clifford built their home where they raised their four children, Brad, Nancy Jo, Todd, and Pamela. Alice worked in various binderies over the years while Clifford worked as a cement mason.
Alice and Clifford retired to Rancho Cordova, California. She loved dancing and even assembled a country dancing troupe that would travel to senior centers to provide entertainment. She enjoyed cooking big holiday meals for family and friends, reading, and watching all sorts of sports. She was always helping others. For many years she volunteered with the Senior Gleaners who deliver food and other items to those in need. She enjoyed the various events at her clubhouse, volunteering to help serve, cook, or do anything to help out. She was the “designated driver” for so many of her friends who no longer were able to drive, providing transportation to their appointments. She was an honored member of the Grange, which promotes the social and economic needs of farmers in the United States. She also became a member of the Moose fraternity who are dedicated to caring for the needs of the young and old.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, and her daughter, Nancy Jo. Her surviving children, daughter, Pamela, and sons, Brad (Leslie) and Todd (Tammy). She will be fondly remembered by her grandsons, Ross, and Aaron, and granddaughters, Brielle (Victor) Atlasman, and Sydney.
