Acelee “Joe” Herold, age 87, of San Tan Valley, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13th, 2024, surrounded by family.

A devoted family man, Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathleen A. Herold (née Metschke), his son Michael Herold, and daughter Lisa (David) Schulteis. He was a proud grandfather to Joshua, Rachel, and Grace Schulteis, and Alison and Emma Herold. Joe is also survived by his sisters, Ann Malitzke and Nancy (Ron) Vruble. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Herold, his mother, Mildred O’Bradovich, his sister Emma Jean “Dee” Sedall, and his brother Tim Herold.

Joe married Kathleen on September 30, 1961, in Barrington, Illinois. He served his country in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961, stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey and RAF Station Mildenhall in England. After his service, he began a long career with United Airlines in 1963, where he advanced from aircraft mechanic to maintenance controller, working in locations such as Chicago, Hilo, San Francisco, and back to Chicago. He retired in 1994 after 31 years with the airline, celebrating 30 years of retirement in June of this year. In 1967 Joe served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT at the Schaumburg, Illinois Fire Department Station #1. He advanced to the role of Assistant Chief and continued to serve until the fire department transitioned to full-time in 1974.

An avid fisherman, Joe found peace and joy spending time outdoors, casting a line in the waters he loved.

A man of strong faith, Joe’s legacy of hard work, love for his family, service to others, and dedication to his faith will always be cherished by those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 11am at Christ Greenfield Lutheran Church, 425 N Greenfield Rd., Gilbert AZ. A light lunch will be served after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Joe’s honor to the Flight 93 National Memorial or Eden Village of Arizona. You can indicate “Joe Herold Memorial” on both donation sites.

our bible study group had a prayer for you and family today

  • Having known Joe since he met my sister many years ago, I can attest to all the positive things he contributed to. Our mutual love of aviation gave us many hours of conversation on the subject. He was a very good man, husband, father and friend.

  • Our condolences to the family, Joe was a very kind man. Very touching service I was able to watch. Wishing you all comfort and prayers during this time. Michael did a fabulous job talking about his Dad, it was certainly a tear jerker.
    Blessings to you all.
